Scam Alert Follow-Up

Some of you may recall my Scam Alert post from last week.  If  you missed it, you may want to go back and check it out.  Click here.  You may recall that I was intending to get my money back through my bank. (I used my debit card for the purchase).

Well, I received a letter from my bank yesterday telling me that because the information was disclosed in the terms and conditions twice prior to the purchase, it is considered a valid purchase and they can not refund my money.  (Here's another lesson learned:  To make a purchase on line, use your credit card, not your debit card.  The credit card company will usually refuse the charge at your request, no questions asked. )

Included with the letter was a 9-page print out of the terms and conditions of the Restaurant.com website, with the disclosures highlighted.  What the disclosure says is that "further consideration may to the restaurant may be required."  It does not state that you are required to make a purchase for double the amount of the coupon in order to be able to use said coupon.  So in my book, it's still a scam.  If it were a legitimate organization, it would state that clearly up front.  Also, a legitimate company would refund your purchase if you are dissatisfied, rather than tell you all they can do is issue a coupon for a different restaurant.

Also, having gone back to Google, I now find there are a slew of complaints from people who have used this website and been ripped off, one way or another.  I have cancelled my debit card and requested a new one, as some people complained that the website kept hitting them with small unautorized charges each mont which might go unnoticed if you don't look at your bill carefuly.

Feel free to link to this blog or copy and post this information on your blog so that as many people as possible can be alerted to not make purchases from Restaurant.com!

And that's my rant for today!

Great, so you are fifty bucks out and had a whole lot of hassle just because you were being nice. What a scam. I know one thing, I'll never use that company, so thanks for that! Sorry you didn't get compensated though, that is really terrible. Surely there's some law against not disclosing that stuff? I mean how are you supposed to know what you're buying?

Wise words...Never use your debit card for on line purchases! Heck, I only use my debit card for the ATM. Sorry you went through this but the warning is greatly appreciated.

Like Polly, I only use my debit card at the ATM.

This was, indeed, a scam - no two ways about it. And the thing is, these scams target the people who can least afford it - retirees and young families.

Thanks for the great consumer lesson. I needed something new to worry about at 3am when I can't sleep :)It makes a person very cautious about using anything except cash. I wish people would put the talent in those creative scam ideas to more constructive use and create something beneficial rather than indulging in greed.

I also don't use my debit card for on line purchases, but I use it all the time for groceries and whatnot. I will stay away from Restaurant.com, that's for sure! Sorry you are out that money, though.

You still have another alternative if the company is located in the US. Try the Better Business Bureau. I also had a scam with that Bender Ball thing and only when I went thru BBB did I get all my money back and finally have it cancelled. (I thought I was making a one time purchase but was getting charged monthly for things I didn't want!) It was a mess and I too learned NOT to use my debit card for online purchases. Hard lessons!!

Steven: Glad if I was able to save you money and hassle!

Glen: so true!

Rose: You are smarter than I. Although this was the first time I've had a problem using my debit card on line.

5thSis: I'm just glad if my experience helps someone else avoid it!

I noticed a charge on my card five or six years ago and when I tracked it down found I'd been paying an on-line music store for several months for music I wasn't downloading. I had signed up for a free trial (I'd gotten 50 free songs when I bought my mp3 player) but had canceled as soon as I got the music... "free" means not having to pay for extra stuff, after all. Well, I was trusting... and forgetful... and neglected to check my bank statement for three months. So my free music cost me $27.00.

I think it's great that you are pursing this... They most likely get away with this because people give up trying to get their money back. GO EVA!

Oh, what an awful thing to happen...can you send Skunk in to tar and feather them? Obviously, this is my first visit...but have been wanting to stop by for some time...Mind if I follow you? Hope not...cause I think you are stuck with me! ;-) ~Janine XO

You're the second person I heard about this scam through. We've decided we're not purchasing from them either. Sorry you had to go through this.
