Moose on the Loose

A three or four year old male moose decided to pay a visit to downtown Portland, Maine, last week.
He first took a dip in Deering Oaks Park Pond which is just about a half mile from Congress Street, which is the main artery in the city.

When he'd had all the swim he wanted, he exited the pond and made his way towad the trees and bushes.  Game wardens were summoned to the scene, as the large animal could cause harm as well as be harmed in traffic.  (A moose caused a 5-car wreck on the Turnpike near Kennebunk, ME, last Wednesday.)
A couple of tourists from Plainfield, Connecticut were driving through Portland and talking about moose, when all of a sudden, there was one in front of them!  They were surprised and amazed at it size.
Park rangers said this was the third moose they've seen in the city in the last two years.  An attempt to shoot the moose with a tranquilizer gun failed when the gun jammed.  (The tranquilized moose would have been moved to safety)

Rangers kept an eye on the moose until it disappeared into the woods, relieved that no harm had come to the moose or others.

Wow. Now, that's scary. I am just glad it returned safely back in to woods. I wonder how the tourists reacted on seeing it.

What a magnificent looking creature! I might have been a little terrified though, face to face.

I'm on vacation this week. I'll be back to blogland full force next week.

Its habitat is being depleted! Or, it crossed the border(s) illegally!

In our neck of the woods, we are accostumed to wild life running loose, eating whatever is on the menu in our yards. I keep planting new and exotic things for them to sample.

That's crazy! At least it was sort of a baby. OK it was big. But moose are hard to see. Maybe he came into town for the sales? At least he didn't try to eat or mate with anyone.

Oh my gosh those things are goofy. But they're HUGE goofy which makes them not just funny but WOAH NELLY funny. As in, "get the hell out of the way" funny. Funny scary. Well. You know what I mean. Right?

As you know from my blog, I LOVE seeing moose in the wild and capturing photos of them...but they can be dangerous to the public and in town.
We heard one ran through our yard (I wasn't home!!) a few months ago too.
