Thrown for a Loop Thursday!

(Just a reminder...if you missed my post yesterday, Baron Bob and I are doing a giveaway.  Click here for the details!)

I know many of you come to my blog looking for a laugh, and I usually do my best to see that you are not disappointed.  But today, there are no laughs.

I was thrown for a loop when I read about this man's death.  An imigrant from El Salvador, Abelino Mazaniego was sitting on a bench in an upscale New York suburb after finishing his shift in a restaurant when he was beaten unconcious by a group of teenagers.  One of the teens filmed the incident on his cell phone and circulated the video among their friends in Summit, New Jersey.  And as if that wasn't bad enough, when he was taken to the emergency room, a nurse stole $640 in cash from his wallet.

A few days later, Mazaniego died.  He is described by co-workers and others as a "genial, really nice gentleman..... a hard worker."

A 19 year-old, an 18 year-old and a 17 year-old are being charged with murder.  As of yet, no motive has been discussed.  It is not known if the attack was racially motiviated, or a "thrill kill," or something else.  Nor has it been disclosed whether there were others involved in the beating.

Forty-seven year-old Mr. Mazaniego was  a cook's assistant at the Dabbawalla Restaurant, where he had been employed for 3 years.  He had been a husband for 29 years and was the father of four children.  The restaurant has posted his picture with a note stating that he was the sole supporter of his family asking patrons to donate money to help his family.

I was so outraged by this story, I was speechless.  To beat someone senseless, film the attack, and then circulate it among friends??  What is wrong with people?  This to me is sick beyond belief!  I hope the attackers get prosecuted to the full extent of the law.  Life in prison is almost too good for these guys.  (The nurse who stole the cash from an unconscious emergency room patient has been arrested as well. I would hope he has been fired!)
Rest in peace, Abelino Mazaniego, and may your family be safe and strong.

These stories make my heart break. He seemed like such a sweet, gentle soul. He could be my own grandfather. It makes me so sad.

Thanks to technology, our kids are so disconnected from reality that I'm afraid this is the direction things are taking. This is just horrible and a sad statement about our world today. God rest his soul.

This is just horrible. It's stories like this that really make me want to go live away from the rest of the world and do my own thing. I just don't understand some people. I hope they get life sentences and that they mean life.

why...why...what is wrong with someone who has no regard for human life???
It is so very very sad.

I wish I could say this surprises me. It doesn't. Why people do this to each other is beyond comprehension.

This is really sad. I wonder what his family are going through right now. Filming and circulating such an act is a sick thing to do. These people deserve to be punished.

I saw that story headline on a website and couldn't bring myself to go any further into it. It is so sad that some people have no shame, values or conscience. Prison is too good for them. I could get into a major rant about this too.

I had not heard about this before, and I'm not sure what is going on in the world to make our children into klllers for kicks. I really hope they go to jail, because they aren't fit for society.

Our world has become sad, sick and scary....I pray for his family.

Very sad.

I'm happy to hear the nurse who robbed him was caught.

The kids responsible for the beating need to spend the rest of their lives in jail.

This is so sad. This was probably a game to these kids!!! Like the ones they might have played....That poor family I sympathize...as for the teens, we can only hope they are prosicuted!!

Heartbreaking. What is happening to us, I ask. But then, I have seen teens and parents go wacko and lose all perspectives. Madness is among us and can erupt at any time. So sad for the family of this poor man.

The murderers and the effing thieving nurse too! People really suck sometimes.

Jen: I agree...too sad.

Canadian: It's unbelievable.

Steven: You have to wonder where this comes from.

New Jersey. He was beaten in New Jersey and taken to Overlook Hospital where he was robbed. He died three days later of his injuries.

Living just a few miles from the scene, it is hard to imagine that animals are so close - and they call themselves teenagers. Unfortunately, these kids have very wealthy parents and will get the very best legal minds to defend them. They should be put in cages and treated like the animals they are.

That poor man. These stupid teens. They were apparently raised by wolves.

Oh my God. That is heart-breaking. Thank you so much for writing about this on your blog. As writers, I believe we have an obligation to not only entertain, but to also shine a spotlight on some of the darker places where others only turn their heads away.

God bless this poor man's family and may his attackers die, rot and burn in hell, the sooner the better.

Have you seen the video games that many parents allow their young kids to play? The violence is amazing, and as Mary said, it causes them to disconnect from reality.

I hate reading about this kind of story. It makes you realise that we really are losing our way as a society. It makes me angry and sad.

I heard about this and it's just horrible. His brother was interviewed and the poor man could hardly speak. What kind of sick mind could think this was funny. Mary at Deep Dish has it right - the youth today have become so disconnected from real life that they're insane.

May God be with this man's family as they come to grips with what's happened. What a world.

What a hideous story. Never in a million years will I understand what would possess people to do something like that. Or steal from a dead body. It's unbelievable.

What a horrific story! The sad thing is that stories like this are not as rare as they used to be as we have a whole generation of kids that could care less about treating people with humanity and kindness. It makes you wonder what is up with their parents.

This is both disgusting and tragic.
I don't know what kind of rage or anger would ever make another human being do this to another...

A very sad story indeed. Bad enough to beat the man, but to film it AND broadcast it? Then to add insult to injury, for someone in the medical profession to STEAL from the patient? My God what is this world coming to? It both saddens me AND frightens me to think of this world and the future.
