Stuck at the Prom

This was a totally new one one me. ShurTech Brands, LLC of Avon, Ohio, which makes Duck Tape Brand Duct Tape, has for ten years in a row sponsored a scholarship contest for teens. The challenge is to make prom attire out of duct tape. The design must be original and made entirely of duct tape. Paint can be used as well as other material for accent, but the dress and the suit themselves must be comprised entirely of duct tape and are judged on workmanship, originality, use of color, accessories, and quantity of duct tape used.

A panel of judges selected by ShurTech selects the top ten finalists, and their photos are posted on a website, and the public votes for their favorites. The couple receiving the most votes each receive a $3000 scholarship, 2nd place, $2000 scholarships, 3rd place, $1000 scholarships, and the remaining 7 couples get $500 scholarships each.

These are the ten finalists, with the first 3 photos being the first, second, and third place winners:

These 1st place winning outfits used 30 rolls of duct tape and took 300 hours to create!

These two used 30 rolls of duct tape and took 140 hours to complete the task.

These third place winning two dresses used 65 rolls of duct tape, were 300 hours in the making,  and the longer dress weighed 50 lbs.

This dress and tux used 25 rolls of duct tape and the dress weighed 14 lbs.

Here's what 26 rolls of duct tape and 59 hours made.

These two used 26 rolls of duct tape and need 87 hours to create their duds.

These two used 38 rolls of duct tape and 130 hours of their time.

These outfits required 25 rolls of duct tape and 36 hours to create.

This couple used 37 rolls of duct tape and spent 130 hours to do the job.

These two used 38 rolls of duct tape and 86 hours and there are over 750 hand cut polka dots incorporated into these creations!

I remember some of the girls at my senior prom being stuck up....but nothing like this!

Talk about a sticky competition!  I was amazed at the creativity shown by these kids!  Who knew you could do so much with duct tape?  Even using all that duct tape, I'l bet they still saved money!  (Plus scored some bucks for college!)  Looks like a win/win situation to me!  Congrats to these great kids!

I saw this earlier online and kept having to go back and look over and over again. I think it's amazing! Seriously - I would LOVE to have that first dress for a shindig. Lol!

Kudos to the kids who came up with the designs AND spent hours of their life making them come to life.

That was amazing!! I've never seen pictures like those. On another note, thanks for the comment that "the door will get wider" on my "top 5 reasons for my gym anxiety" post. Ha! Good to know. Speaking of that place... I haven't been in a while...

How...interesting!

I've heard of duck tape wedding dresses and even read about one bride whose dress was too tight, so she duck taped her hips and waist and fit right into that dress!

I hate to admit it, but I actually like the yellow/green rain flowery couple.

I've heard of this contest some years ago. these kids are so creative!

I just remembered that my son made a coat out of duct tape when he was in high school. I wish I had pictures of it!
