Sundays in My Neck of the Woods

If you've been following me for a while, you've probably figured out by now that Hubby and I like to try different eating places.  We've been lucky, for the most part, that the restaurants we've visited have been the sources of some delicious lunches and dinners,  Because we are both now retired, we try to limit ouselves to one meal out per week, to keep from blowing the budget.

Our luck ran out this week.  We chose a place called Susan's Fish and Chips which has year after year been named as one of the number one places for cheap eats in the Maine Sunday Telegram Newspaper Poll.  I don't know if we hit it on a bad day, or if our expectations were too high, but we were disappointed.
If this joint were mentoned in Guy Fieri's "Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives,"  it would definitely be in the "dive" catagory.  It occupies half of a building that houses a car repair shop, which isn't a problem by itself, but it means the parking lot is often filled with people who are there to have work done on their cars and you are hard pressed to find a space for yours.

The inside has a "warehouse" feel to it.  there is a counter with three or four bar stools  , and then half a dozen picnic tables for additional seating.    There's just a cluttered, chaotic look to the walls, with hand- printed posters scattered about, advertising specials, etc.  Had it not been for all the times I had seen this place listed in that newspaper poll as number one or two for cheap eats, I probably would have turned around and left without eating.  But, I gave them the benefit of the doubt and went up to the counter and ordered.
Hubby had a cup of fish chowder which I didn't photograph because it just looked like a styrofoam coffee cup filled with milk.  He did say it was quite good, however.  In addition to the chowder, he had the Haddock Burger which came with a side of fries.  A toasted hamburger bun held a good sized piece of fried haddock and some lettuce.  I will say he ate it all, but it was later than our usual lunch time, and he was very hungry.  The verdict was that the sandwich was "passable, but nothing special."

I had the "Fish and Chips."  I figured if that's what the place was named, it should be their specialty.  This consisted of some freshcut fries, two large pieces of fried fish and a small side of coleslaw.  On the positive side, the food was not greasy.  However, I felt the fish and potatoes were tasteless.  I barely touched the fries, but I did eat most of the fish.  It just had no flavor at all.  The coleslaw was okay, but not exactly newsworthy.

Like I said, we may have hit a bad day, but I wouldn't go back again--not with all the choices available in our area.  I'm just puzzled by all the positive write-ups I've seen about this little restaurant, that I felt it didn't live up to!

Dives have the best food. My husband taught me that back in our traveling days. We'd go investigating back roads and discover some fine cookin'.....especially in New England, where we spent a lot of time.

I found you on Sunday's in My City...I think, althought I didn't see a link over there so maybe this was happenstance?

I just wanted to say that I've never seen fish and chips look like that! The batter/breading doesn't even look right! It looks bland even in pictures.

Good luck with the next place you try out!

So disappointing when you are looking forward to something. On the bright side, maybe you can just pretend this fiasco did not happen and sneak in another dinner excursion this week?

Hmmm, that is curious as to why it was so well thought of and didn't meet expectations. I wonder if the cheapness of the food lowers expectations that much!

WHat a bummer that it wasn't as good as you had hoped! :( I hate when that happens!

Thanks for stopping by!

Thats too bad, and a restaurant in Maine should know how to cook fish.

The pic of you meal looks a bit paltry...where are all the fries.

Thanks for the heads up

It's disappointing when you spend money out for a meal and are disappointed. First impressions are everything. Well, your hubby got a full stomach out of the event so that was good!!

Sometimes, dives have the best food, but that just looks ghetto!

It does happen.....a disapointing meal, and someone has recomended it....Well, with all the choices we have, no need of repeats!

Don't you just hate it when you go out to eat and waste valuable tummy space on food that is just blah. It feels like such a letdown.

For me, I love dives and diners and will opt for them any day over a fine dining spot. That being said though, it's a hit or miss with many of them.

Don't you just hate when a restaurant doesn't live up to it's reputation? Gosh that's disappointing! The food sure looked good in the photos though!

Maybe if Guy did go there they might add a little bit of spice?
