Memorial Day Thoughts

REMEMBERING THE VETERANS...

He was getting old and paunchy
And his hair was falling fast,
And he sat around the Legion,
Telling stories of the past.

Of a war that he once fought in
And the deeds that he had done,
In his exploits with his buddies;
They were heroes, every one.

And 'tho sometimes to his neighbors
His tales became a joke,
All his buddies listened quietly
For they knew where of he spoke.

But we'll hear his tales no longer,
For ol' Bob has passed away,
And the world's a little poorer
For a Soldier died today.

He won't be mourned by many,
Just his children and his wife.
For he lived an ordinary,
Very quiet sort of life.

He held a job and raised a family,
Going quietly on his way;
And the world won't note his passing,
'Tho a Soldier died today.

When politicians leave this earth,
Their bodies lie in state,
While thousands note their passing,
And proclaim that they were great.

Papers tell of their life stories
From the time that they were young
But the passing of a Soldier
Goes unnoticed, and unsung.

Is the greatest contribution
To the welfare of our land,
Some jerk who breaks his promise
And cons his fellow man?

Or the ordinary fellow
Who in times of war and strife,
Goes off to serve his country
And offers up his life?

The politician's stipend
And the style in which he lives,
Are often disproportionate,
To the service that he gives.

While the ordinary Soldier,
Who offered up his all,
Is paid off with a medal
And perhaps a pension, small.

It's so easy to forget them,
For it is so many times
That our Bobs and Jims and Johnnys,
Went to battle, but we know,

It is not the politicians
With their compromise and ploys,
Who won for us the freedom
That our country now enjoys.

Should you find yourself in danger,
With your enemies at hand,
Would you really want some cop-out,
With his ever waffling stand?

Or would you want a Soldier--
His home, his country, his kin,
Just a common Soldier,
Who would fight until the end.

He was just a common Soldier, ]
And his ranks are growing thin,
But his presence should remind us
We may need his like again.

For when countries are in conflict,
We find the Soldier's part
Is to clean up all the troubles
That the politicians start.

If we cannot do him honor
While he's here to hear the praise,
Then at least let's give him homage
At the ending of his days.

Perhaps just a simple headline
In the paper that might say:
"OUR COUNTRY IS IN MOURNING,
A SOLDIER DIED TODAY."

I tried in vain to find the author of this poem. It seemed so appropriate for Memorial Day, I felt I had to post it. Many thanks to all who have given their lives for our country

A veteran is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to
'My country' for an amount "up to and including my life."

Sundays in My Neck of the Woods

Sometimes, no matter what day of the week it is, you just have a hankering for a burger.  Well, have I got a burger for you!  Here in New England is a  small chain of Burger Joints called Wild Willy's.

We visited the South Portland, Maine, location, which is housed in a Western style log cabin.

While a player piano provided some background melodies, we browsed the menu.

In addition to a number of different burger choices, there were steak sandwiches, chicken sandwiches, salads, and chili.

There were bison burgers, for those looking for a leaner burger.

There were also gluten free choices...which come in a gluten free bun!  And even a gluten free Lager, which were new additions since our last visit, and a big hit with the clientele, the manager assured us.

We placed our order at the counter and slipped into one of the booths to await our food.

Before too long, our dinner was on our table:

Hubby had chosen the Willy Burger...with cheese, tomato, lettuce, and Mayo.

I'm a sucker for the Bubba BBQ Burger, which has bacon, cheese, onion, pickle and BBQ sauce!  I confess it's the only sandwich I've ever had there in our many visits, because it's just SOOOO good!

We shared a side of onion rings which were coated with a tasty crumb crust and were not the least bit greasy!

And the fresh cut fries were pretty good, too, although I like mine just a little more crispy/  Despite that, nothing went to waste; correction, it probably all went to  my waist, but was totally worth it!

Wild Willy's has two locations in Maine, one in New Hampshire, and three in Massachusetts.  To find the one nearest to you, and to check out their full menu at their website by clicking here

Note:  I received no compensation for this review, unless you count a delicious meal for my money!

Time for a Back Break!

I apologize to you all.  I feel like my posts this past week have been cop outs!  Very little writing, frankly because it kills my back to sit at my computer for any amount of time..   I'm going to have to take a break until I get my back problems resolved.  I hope you'll all still be here when I return.  My back problem is also the reason I haven't been commenting on many blogs lately, either.

I hope a week will do me, because Tuesday June 1st is my one year blogaversery.  I'll be back that day to give you an update, if not to stay.

Sundays in My Neck of the Woods

Saco and Biddeford are two small cities separated by a river.  There are an amazing number of churches in these two communities.  Below are a sampling:

That last steeple warranted a second look!

Have a restful, peaceful Sunday!

Saturday Silliness

When a woman wears a leather dress,

A man's heart beats quicker,

And his throat gets dry,

He goes weak in the knees,

And he begins to think irrationally.

Ever wonder why?.

It's because she smells like a new truck !

****************

A police car pulled up in front of grandma's house, and grandpa got out.

The polite policeman explained that this elderly gentleman said that he was lost in the park and couldn't find his way home.

"Oh papa," said grandma, "You've been going to that park for over 30 years! So how could you get lost?"

Leaning close to grandma, so that the policeman couldn't hear, he whispered, "I wasn't lost mama... I was just too tired to walk home."

***********************

A fourth-grader was excited that he had tried out and gotten a role in his school's play. His father was really proud of him and asked, "So, what part did you get?"

The little boy replies, "I got the part of a man who's been married for 25 years."

His father congratulated him said "That's good son. Maybe next time you'll get a speaking role!"

***********************

A lady goes to her priest one day and tells him, 'Father, I have a problem.. I have two female parrots, But they only know how to say one thing.'

'What do they say?' the priest inquired.

They say, Hi, we're hookers! Do you want to have some fun?'
That's obscene!' the priest exclaimed, Then he thought for a moment. 'You know,' he said, 'I may have a solution to your problem. I have two male talking parrots, Which I have taught to pray and read the Bible. Bring your two parrots over to my house, And we'll put them in the cage with Francis and Peter. My parrots can teach your parrots to praise and worship, And your parrots are sure to stop saying . . That phrase . . In no time.'

Thank you,' the woman responded, 'this may very well be the solution.'

The next day, She brought her female parrots to the priest's house. As he ushered her in, She saw that his two male parrots Were inside their cage holding rosary beads and praying. Impressed, She walked over and placed her parrots in with them.

After a few minutes, The female parrots cried out in unison: Hi, we're hookers! Do you want to have some fun?'
There was stunned silence. Shocked, One male parrot looked over at the other male parrot And exclaimed,
'Put the beads away, Frank. Our prayers have been answered!'

Swimsuit Weather

It was a beautiful, sunny day today; beach weather.   For one wild moment I considered going shopping for a new swimsuit.  Then I remembered what that would be like!

And then I decided against the  idea!

Thursday Thoughts: New Weight Loss Method

I know that I need to lose weight; my doctor has strongly suggested it, my oldest son (the exercise Nazi) tries to kindly remind me, and my latest bout with a bad back and a stiff neck are less subtle messages.  For a person who loves to eat, loves dessert, and loves chocolate, and has been pretty sedintary for some time, this is a daunting task.

Lady GaGa may have given me the answer:

Does anyone know where I can score one of these "feeding deterrents?"  I guess that bad boy would discourage over eating.....   it might even discourage eating at all!

A Collection that Doesn't Forget!

My sister collects Elephants.  Not live ones--they'd take up too much space, and then there's the whole elephant poop thing.  Who needs to deal with that?

Some people would be content with a nice painting like the one she has on her living room wall.

Or maybe this group of brass ones would make them content.  But not my sister.  She LOVES elephants in a big way!

Her late husband built her a shelf for them.

And when that was filled, he built a beautiful cabinet of glass and mirrors for her.

Here's a close up look of the contents of the cabinet.

There's the first shelf....
The second shelf....
The third shelf....
And the fourth shelf!  (ignore my camera reflected in the mirror as I took the photo)

Soon, the cabinet was filled, and these two guys were relegated to the top"

And this guy just sits on the living room rug!  They are beautiful!  And I didn't get them all....a half or dozen or so had made their way out onto the window sills on her glassed in sunporch and I couldn't get a good shot of those!  But you get the idea!  The girl loves elephants!

Raindrops Keep Falling in My Head!

Some days I'm just not motivated to write.

This was one of those days!  (Actually I had a post all done, but PJ at Scenes from the back of my Eylids stole it--and did it much better than I had planned!)

So, in desperation, I decided to download these photos which I had been saving for a rainy day.  Well, truthfully, the sun has been shining all day,  but it's been raining in my brain. Enjoy!

"I've gotten so fat, I can't even scratch my own butt!"

"What part of Quiet did you not understand?"

"These daily walks are killing me!"

"I'm so cute they won't mind if I shred these!"

"Okay, now don't move for about a week!"

"I had a really ruff night last night!"

"Now if I  can just grab a little shut-eye before my master comes home. . ."

Tick Warning

It's that time of year when we start spending hours outside, in the garden, the backyard, at the campground, and on the beach.  With all that comes Tick Season.

TICK WARNING! I hate it when people spread bogus warnings, but this one is real. Please share this with everyone you know!!

If someone comes to your front door saying they are checking for ticks due to the warm weather and asks you to take your clothes off and dance around with your arms up, DO NOT DO IT! THIS IS A SCAM! They only want to see you naked. I wish I'd gotten this yesterday. I feel so used and dirty!
