Sundays in My Neck of the Woods

The Full Belly Deli at 1060 Brighton Avenue, Portland, Maine, is purported to be the closest to a New York style deli  you can find in Maine.  I've never been to a Deli in New York, so I can't say whether that's an accurate assessment.

It's not a very large place; I counted 13 tables.  Obviously, it's a popular lunch spot, because when we arrived, the line extended all the way to the entrance.  Customers orders were taken and filled very quickly, and I took this shot of the deli counter just before I left.

The menu was extensive; every kind of sandwich you could think of, plus some you would never think of were  listed.  In addition there were soups, sides of coleslaw, potato salad, or French fries, burger baskets, and dinners.

Their logo was on the wall...a chubby guy with glasses, wearing an apron, and about to chomp down on a huge sandwich.  The man behind the counter who waited on me looked very much like the logo.

This time hubby and I both ordered the same--the hot pastrami special on marble rye.  It came with a side of coleslaw, a side of potato salad, and a crisp kosher pickle.

I had to take a close up of my sandwich so you could get a better idea of how huge it was!  It was delicious, although it could have used some more mustard.  Apparently, only one slice of bread was spread with mustard; I really would have loved to have the meat dripping with it! The pickle, coleslaw, and potato salad were equally tasty!  Needless to say, there were leftovers to take home!  The restaurant provides plenty of sandwich wrap and paper bags for toting leftovers.

The picture above comes from what I believe is the owner's My Space Page.  It's not a typical restaurant website, but it does have some photos of the wonderful deli meats available.  All their meats are prepared on site, and the sandwiches are made on your choice of fresh white, wheat, rye, marble rye, or bulky rolls.  There are also an assortment of cold softdrinks, juices, and bottled water available.

There are Full Belly Delis in California, Connecticut, New York, as well as Portland and Northeast Harbor, Maine, but there doesn't appear to be any connection between them, other than the common name.  The logos and menus are different.

I know we will go back to the one in Portland; it was just too good not to!

Those sandwiches look as big as my head! Love the name of the deli, I bet it is very accurate. This time I was smart, and had breakfast before stopping by.

Those sandwiches look amazing! We don't really have a ton of delis. We have sandwich shops, but I wouldn't call them the same thing.

"Abbondanza!" Yes, it looks a lot like a New York Deli, from the size of that sandwich.

I love your weekly guided tour of your part of Maine. I have friends in Portland and a little part of me would love to visit (and see a Seadogs game) but it isn't very likely. So this is the next best thing!

In Maine you have delis (that doesn't really look correct when spelled like that but I think it is...) that claim to be "NYC Style" while in NYC we have lobsters that claim to be from Maine. Nobody is ever happy where they're at. Anyway, your post is making everyone hungry Eva, nice job!

Oh, how I love pastrami.

In Minneapolis the places to go are Cecil's Deli and The Brothers Deli. Fantastic...
