Maine's Annual Lobster Dip

I'm not talking about some kind of butter sauce you dip your lobster in before eating it.  No, I'm talking about the Annual Lobster Dip held at Old Orchard Beach, Maine every January 1st.    This event has been taking place on New Year's Day since 1998.  Each participant is required to raise at least $100 and all proceeds go to the Maine Special Olympics.  The pictures below were taken by Jill Brady, a staff photographer from the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram.
Hundreds of spectators looked on, while the brave, hearty souls took the plunge for charity.

Some participants wore costumes, but there are no requirements.  Above, the team from The Brunswick Hotel are gearing up for the dip.
There's no requirement that one stay in the water longer than it takes to get wet, and most swimmers didn't linger!  Young and old, and even a pooch braved the surf.

Dylan Woodhouse of Saco, who suffered serious injury at this very beach during a summer when he dove into a wave and was knocked to the bottom, did his part for charity with encouragement from Carrie Callahan of Boston, his friend and former physical therapist.

If you ever feel the urge to go for a swim in Maine, in January, your efforts to help the Special Olympics would be appreciated!   (Saturday, the temps were in the high 40s [Farenheit], which may have been one of the mildest dip days donors have experienced.  Water temps were in the low 40s.  Sound like fun?)

On another topic altgether, today, January 3rd,  is National Sleep Day.  Here are some suggestions for how to celebrate:

1.  Sleep in today.  (If it's too late for that, there are other options!)

2.  Take an afternoon nap.

3.  Read the story of Rip Van Winkle with your kids.

4.  Take pictures of sleeping pets and sleeping people and post them.

5.  Discuss the importance of adequate sleep to your good health.

That's it folks.   I have to go celebrate now---my recliner and my Snuggie are calling me!

I couldn't possible do the Lobster Dip-- I'm napping-- and a wimp. Yikes, that looks COLD but what a terrific cause.

Hope your New Year is fantastic Eva. I look forward to reading all about it.

Cheers, jj

Brrrr..much better to take a power nap in the afternoon and send the money in for the Maine Special Olympics. With age comes wisdom!

I would certainly be a lobster when I got out of the water.

A resolution this year is to get more sleep.

Ocean dipping in Maine in January, why does that not sound like my kind of party AT ALL? You crazy New Englanders and your "Let's be as cold as possible" traditions. You make everyone else look like giant pussies. Like those folks who do the Polar Bear Plunge around the world every year. What is wrong with them? Haven't they heard of heating and sweaters and heated pools and staying in bed? Good lord. :)

Well, we did the Polar Bear Plunge here on the other coast, too! I wrote about it, and it was colder here in Washington State than it was in Maine, can you believe it?

I'm already up, but I just got ten hours of good sleep, feel like a million!

I just have to say that those people are crazy. No way I would do that. I moved to Florida for a reason. I take my tropical paradise over that any day.

A dip for charity is a good dip in my book, any time of the year. Happy Sleep Day, Eva. Not that we need any of it, as we do pretty much what we want to do anytime, any day. I guess we'll pass it on to the youth, who'd avoid sleeping on purpose. The fools.

Special Olympics is a cause very close to our hearts, and so extra loved this post.
Only, I've been cold all day and now I'm freezing.

Think I'll take a nap!

Brrrr! That makes me cold! We have a Polar Bear Dip here in the Midwest for that very thing. I give generously to those who are willing to dip!

I didn't know National sleep day was today! I celebrated it yesterday!

Next time I'm in Maine in January I'll take a dip!:0

RetiredandCrazy: I'm all about the nap rather than the freezing dip!

Veg: I agree.....you wouldn't catch me jumping in the ocean in January! (Unless I was in southern Florida!)

Michelle: You have no sense of adventure! lol

Glen: I agree, and glad you're observing National Sleep Day.

Jen: I'm with you...staying warm!

Terri: Sorry about that! The nap is a good idea!

I could never! I'm cold just thinking about it! I'd have to donate the $$ to support this cause. I think the idea would make me too chilly to even be a spectator!

I didn't even know it was Sleep Day and I took a nap this afternoon! Great picture from the Lobster Dip...I love all the different people that dive in for a great cause!

I've never heard of this charity event before (probably because I live in VA) but it sounds like a wonderful idea! I like the idea of sleeping all day long.... :)

Jules: I don't think I could do it either! Brrrrrrr!

Tam: Your body knew it was National Sleep Day!
