Sundays in My Neck of the Woods

One would think The Station House Grill at 415 Hollis Road, in Hollis, Maine, is an unlikely place for a good meal.  There's a big Sunoco Gas sign out front, and a convenience store on one end, but when you go inside and turn right, you enter one of two large dining rooms, bustling with activity.
When we arrived, we were lucky enough to get a table and have time to browse the extensive menu.  There was also a specials board which I photographed, but reflections from my flash and the dining room lights made it illegible.

We both decided to start with salads.  They were surprisingly large with lettuce, tomatoes, green pepper, onion, black olives and cheese.  We each received two little cups of our choice of dressings to go with it.  The veggies were all fresh and crispy, and the dressing, though not home made, was also very good.

Hubby chose to have a favorite of his called Shepherd's Pie, which consists of a layer of hamburger and a layer of creamed corn, topped with mashed potatoes, all baked in the oven 'til the potato is lightly browned.  It's a meal I rea lly dislike and never make, so when he can find it in a restaurant, he can't resist ordering.  It was served with a biscuit that had been halved and grilled.  He enjoyed this treat, as he doesn't have it very often.  It's usually only found in diners that offer home-cooked meals.

I went for the fried checken, mashed potatoes with gravy, which came with a side of coleslaw.  The chicken was pretty good, as was the coleslaw.   The gravy and mashed potatoes left a lot to be desired.  I didn't eat them.  The gravy tasted like it might have been out of a can, or thickened with corn starch, neither of which are favorites of mine.

There was a large display case of home made desserts, and since we hadn't ordered a dessert in some time, we decided to indulge.  Hubby couldn't resist the Chocolate Cream Pie.  It had a really thick layer of chocolate on a flaky crust with a generous serving of real whipped cream on top.  He had no problem making quick work of that!

A sucker for anything chocolate and peanut butter, I ordered the Chocolate cake with Peanut Butter Frosting.   It was rich and delicious, but such a large serving, I left half of it behind!  The waiter kindly offered to box it up for me, but I decided I'd had enough of those calories and resisted.
All in all, I'd say the Station House Grill wasn't a bad place to eat, and I would stop there again, when in the neighborhood.  I saw some great-looking sandwiches being served to other tables, and I think that's what I would want to try next visit!  If you would like to see their full menu and more about the place, click here to visit their website.

Oh dear heavens. I need to get over there and cook you an Aussie Shepherd's Pie. It looks nothing like that picture. I can't say how much different it would taste, because I don't know what *that* one tastes like, but mine will bring all the kids around for dinner if I let them know I'm making it. I don't have a specific recipe, but next winter when I make one, I'll take photos and blog them. I'm not saying that the one your hubby likes isn't nice, but you don't like it and I think you might like mine.

Nothing worse than bad mashed potatoes since they are a favorite of mine. The chicken looked good.

The cake looked awesome and so big it was falling off the plate. Peanut butter and chocolate has to be good. Now I want some. :)

Mmmmmmm!!! Looks so good, especially the salad...I'm a salad nut. Husband would love that shepherd pie. No way would I ever say no to boxing up leftover dessert!!! You either have tons of will power, or you had a brief moment of insanity, lol!

Southern girl here....all about the Fried Chicken! That looked good. Hey I got a question. I'm a lighthouse freak. I'll bet you have tons of them around Maine. I've never been to Maine but would love to see their lighthouses. So....just suggesting (begging)...but how about posting some lighthouse pics. It would be a fun adventure and I'm sure there's a good restaurant nearby. So's you could kill two birds (foodie Sunday and me) with one stone. Like I said, Just a suggestion. I really love lighthouses!

Shephard's Pie, Fried chicken and mashed potatoes with gravy. . . well thanks a whole bunch Eva!

While you wrestle with retirement I am wrestling with my need to go fry up some greasy chicken!

Now, how did I not know there is a road and a city in Maine named after me? HOLLIS? Really?

Damn, those potatoes LOOKED sooo good too! Sorry they were a disappointment! I do like Shepherd's Pie, unlike most of my friends. I attribute it to the fact that we didn't have much money growing up so ground beef was the most expensive meat we would get. My mom never made Shepherd's Pie (we are Italian and I never heard of it until about 10 years ago) but I would concoct various dishes with the ground beef when I was a kid. Everything was fair game and I made some pretty *interesting* "meals." Naturally, when someone invited me to try a mess of a cassarole on a plate with ground beef, I was all for it!

Clippedwings: Momentary sanity.

Terri: Lighthouses coming your way, soon!

Nicki: My mom made shepherd's pie. I hated it. I love spaghetti, hamburger pie (a cheapie mom made), and meatloaf.

The pictures looked great. What a tough job, reviewing restaurants..and some people get paid big $$$ for it. That's your next career Eva!
