Sundays in My Neck of the Woods

Five Guys Burgers have come to Portland, Maine!  Located at the Fore Street Parking Garage (which makes it easy to park, if you don't mind paying), the restaurant has the same quality burgers and fries as you'll find in their other stores across the country.  I can testify to that, having been to their locations in Manchester, NH, Gloucester, MA, Fairfax, VA, and a few more between the east and west coasts.

You place your order at the counter, and then help yourself to some shell peanuts to munch on while your waiting for your meal.  You can choose from hamburgers, cheeseburgers, bacon cheeseburgers, veggie burgers, and grilled cheese sandwiches.   There's  a plethora of toppings to pick from, too.  You might want grilled onions (my favorite), pickles, mustard, ketchup, mayo, tomatoes, and/or lettuce.
You can select your drink of choice and free refills from the soda fountain.  I don't believe they offer coffee, however.

I chose the cheese burger which consists of two good-sized beef patties and lots of gooey melted cheese with mustard, ketchup, and grilled onions.
Hubby preferred to get tomatoes, lettuce, mayo and grilled onions on his cheeseburger.  If you don't have enough appetite for a double burger, ask for a small hamburger or cheeseburger and you'll get a single.  But their standard burger comes as a double...and it's the best!
Then there's the fresh cut fries.  I asked for a regular size order for hubby and I to share, but I think they may have made an error and given me a large;  we did our best!  All their food is fresh.  Nothing is frozen, which may be why everything tastes so good!
There were all kinds of testimonials on the walls from newspapers around the country.   This one was nearest to  me, so I snapped a photo.  There were more recent ones posted however.  You may recall that President Obama has eaten at the Five Guys in Washington, D.C. with his family.
We visited after the lunch rush was over, but the dining area is kept immaculate.  There are employees cleaning the tables and sweeping the floor constantly to keep it that way.

The chain has received lots of awards and recognition for the quality and tastiness of their fare.  I'm not at all surprised!  It's my understanding they plan to add four or five more restaurants here in Maine.  I hope none will be closer than this.....the challenge to my limited willpower will be too great!

I've always preferred a single meat patty burger, with or without salad. To me it's a much more satisfying meat to bun ratio.

I'd never heard of Five Guys before today, out here in Australia, the main burger chains are Maccas and Hungry Jacks. A lot of fish'n'chip shops do their own versions of burgers though and they're better than Maccas and HJ's in my opinion.

Five Guys is the 'religious experience of burgers and fries'. They could easily conquer the world!

Those hamburgers look delicious! You know, we saw one of these restaurants on our way home....maybe it was in Nebraska or Iowa, I'm not sure. Next time we see one, I'll be sure to stop in!

Cheeseburgers! My favorite food! This place looks awesome. The food looks a lot like the burgers and fries from 'In N Out Burger' here in Vegas. Well they have them other places, too. MY FAVE!

Thanks for showing us Five Guys. I've never eaten at one, but sure would love to give it a try after seeing this and hearing your rave review!

They have the BEST greasy burgers and fries in these parts! And are most likely to blame for at least 50 of my excess poundage.

Yum, now I am hungry! As an Aussie I haven't heard of Five Guys before but I will look for them when I am in the US later this year.

Hi Eva, just sticking my head in for a little visit. I'm almost done, almost being the key word.

Oh, how I love me some 5 Guys. Your pics make me want one right now. I think I'll suggest it for dinner. That and the In N' Out burger are the best burgers in the land in my opinion. And we often eat late at night and so those wonderful 5 Guys folks overflow our bag with fries because they say they don't want to throw them out, because that's what we need more calories.

These are fun pictures. I don't think we have Five Guys in CA. Our loss; that cheeseburger looks delcious.

My husband and I went to Five Guys recently and there were two culinary school students - white jackets and all-- enjoying burgers and fries. Gourmet, Eva... absolutely gourmet! :)

We got a Five Guys about three months ago. Prior to that I'd never heard of them.

Today I had my first Five Guys burger and fries -- my wife surprised me with them for lunch.

Nothing beats a cheeseburger.

Canadian: You are so right!
