Sundays in My Neck of the Woods

Wrestling With Retirement is taking a day off; no restaurant review today.    However, I thought I'd share  a newspaper ad I came across:

Milo Black Fly Festival

Saturday, July 2, 2011  (this is what you missed!)

The day is planned with a Western theme  (saddles and spurs were available for riding those critters)

Featuring family-friendly activities, children’s games starting at 8:00 a.m. (prizes were given for black fly bronco busting)

Area vendors at Trade Winds parking lot  (hope the wind kept the flies off the hot dogs!)

Parade at 12:00 noon   (assuming they could line those black flies up in parade formation!)

Black Fly Festival Queen, King, Prince, Princess, Duke and Duchess parading in convertibles  (all royalty were issued jewel encrusted fly swatters for protection in lieu of scepters)

American Jamboree at Milo Town Hall at 4:00 p.m.  (jitterbug was the popular dance)

Lighted boat parade at dark on the Sebec River (citronella candles available for a small fee)

Milo, Maine

Note:  the information in bold prin was in the actual ad; everything in parenthesis is my speculation!

Very Creative, maybe we should have some festivals here. Might as well celebrate instead of complaining.

Our possible festivals:

Horse and Deer Fly Festival could be combined for convienence. The person who caught and removed the most heads of said flies would be awarded a trophy.

Cumcumber Beetle Celebration. All could come dressed as the striped bug who is destroying every plant in the garden with the best costume being presented with a large trophy constructed from beetle bodies.

I think I should stop now...you may delete this if you like. This may be a precursor to a bad bug mood today...God help my family!

Have a fantastic day!

Black Flies are awesome. But, nothing says "summer vacation" quite like the massive Pogie (spelling...?) Die -Off in August. Ahhhhh, New England!!!!!

Terri: Maybe next year!

Stephanie: I don't know about that recipe for black fly stew, though!

Jayne: It's a little crazy, but I suppose so!
