Frantic Friday

Mr. Eva and I maybe moving closer to my 2 sons soon.  We are looking at senior housing and if all goes well, we will be downsizing from 3 bedrooms and 2 baths to 1 bedroom and 1 bath.  Right now, we are 45 minutes drive from my oldest son and nearly an hour away from the youngest.  This move will bring us to within 12 miles of the oldest son, and will shorten the drive to the youngest son's home also.  Mr. Eva's son lives in Texas, so we are still going to be a great distance from him, unfortunately.

The result will be a safer winter; we won't have to worry about shoveling snow or me having another "I've fallen and I can't get up" episonde like I did last winter.  The parking lot and walkways are kept clear of ice and snow for us.

Right now, I'm a little frantic because we will have to get rid of almost everything we own.  The senior apartment is very small (which will be a joy to take care of), but just does not have enough space for our two Lazyboy couches, our large dining room table and chairs, our computer desks, my cookbook collection, my Christmas Village, our large artificial Christmas tree, and tons of other things!

On the upside, I'm learning to navigate Craigs List and have started listing things in hopes of selling them and acquiring the cash to move the items we are keeping and to purchase two recliners and a breakfast-nook size table and chairs.

The next few weeks, if we do move, are going to be hectic, so I will apologize in advance for the likely decrease in my posting and commenting on your blogs.  Once we are settled in, I promise to be right back at it!

I think that's a great idea. As we get older moving next to the kids makes sense, so you can bother them on a more routine basis...lol. I forget you're in Maine, how do you stand those cold, snowy winters? I'm less than 100 miles form the ocean and I already think it's too freaking cold in this desert.

I understand! Good luck. I downsized from a nearly 3800 sq ft house to 800 sq ft several years ago. It feels good to live small and simple :). Stuff is only stuff. I miss my books the most.. English major attaches me to books, I guess :).

I totally understand! As difficult as it may be to get rid of so much, and to make the actual move, you will gain peace of mind and nearness to most of your family. Here's hoping it all goes smoothly.

I know how you feel. Mrs. Penwasser and I are seriously thinking about selling the house for something smaller (as I type this I know I have to go mow the lawn...UGH!). Not only will it be cheaper, but it will be less a hassle to take care of. We're thinking of moving to Virginia to be closer to her 83 year old father. Maybe...maybe...

Hi Eva,

I recently discovered a blog that might be of some help to you ...

I'm afraid I might be downsizing too in the years to come.

I think it's wise to make this decision before it's forced on you. At a certain point it isn't fun or necessary to have a big house and, like you say, a smaller place will be easier to maintain. Mrs. Chatterbox and I got rid of the big house a few years ago and now we're in a small townhouse, just perfect for us. And being closer to your kids will be a joy. I can do without you for a while, so long as it isn't permenant.
Take care.

I've downsized a few times now, from five bedrooms to four bedrooms, to three bedroom, all houses, then a two bedroom unit, now a one bedroom flat. This last one was the hardest. i got rid of so much stuff, then when I moved in I found I still had too much to fit in. Thank goodness I have a closed in back porch here, some of my stuff is out there. good luck with selling your things.

Eva that sounds like an absolutely fantastic idea. I have no doubt the move will be for the best. Good thing about books and getting rid of them is that you can find so many things recipes included online nowadays.

A big undertaking, but sounds like a lot of upside!
